Taylor Russell McKenzie was conceived in Vancouver, British Columbia on July 18th, 1994. She was also raised in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. Russell was the daughter of a black dad and a white mom. She grew up with her mom's family. Her skin color made her feel unwelcome in her youth. [3] Her parents struggled financiallyand were always shifting, having to leave their homes sixteen times to pursue her father's profession. Despite this adversity, Russell mentioned how in her younger years "there was always an opportunity for re-invention, to make something new."As an infant, Russell was already artistically inclined, at first, she would like to pursue a career in ballet. She later wanted to be a painter. At the age of 18, she took her first acting class and finally found her place. She used the money she earned from her job to buy a car and would then drive to Los Angeles, to audition. If her funds ran out then she would go back home to work, until she was able to earn enough to be able to audition again. This was the way she worked for four more years until she received her first TV part.
